Finding Time for Yourself

Successful weight loss after bariatric surgery means adopting new behaviors and habits that will make you healthier and happier. In this work-a-day world, it can often seem impossible to carve out time for yourself. But it isn’t impossible and it is necessary to allow yourself some personal time in order to keep your stress level, eating habits and happiness in check.

Here are a few tips to make time for yourself:

  • Make a firm date with yourself every week, or every other week, and put it in your calendar as you would any other appointment. If someone needs you to do something during that time, explain to them that you can’t because you have a prior engagement.
  • Cut out unnecessary duties. There may be many chores and activities that you do on a daily basis that can be done two or three times a week instead. Recognizing these activities and reducing the time you spend on them will help you find extra time to spend on yourself.
  • Hire help. Hire a housekeeper to clean your house once a month. Hire a neighbor to bring your kids to soccer practice once a week. Hire someone to mow your lawn. Try to find at least one duty or chore that you do per month and hire someone else to do it. Make sure you use this new-found time for yourself, and not to create another chore to do.
