Weekly Menu Planning After Bariatric Surgery

After weight loss surgery, you will need to completely revamp the way you eat. Your stomach will hold significantly less food than before, which means that you will have to make sure that the foods that you do eat provide adequate nutrition without any excess bulk. Formulating weekly menus can help you make sure that you are getting the nutrients you need, especially as your needs will change each week as you recover from surgery. When setting out on a nutritional plan it is important to make sure you follow the advice of your doctor, but learning a few general tips can help you stay full and healthy.

During the first two to three weeks after lap band surgery, you will be limited to purees and liquids. Some foods for this stage include broths, unsweetened juices, and pureed fruits, meats and vegetables. Check the grocery stores here in Albany for pureed baby foods, or puree plain meats and vegetables at home.

Around a month after surgery, you will be able to incorporate some soft foods. Choices at this time can include yogurt, ground fish and mashed potatoes. Make sure that you are getting adequate amounts of calcium, protein and other nutrients. It is very important to avoid sugared drinks and carbonated drinks, as these can fill you up without providing any nutritional value.

When your doctor approves regular foods, begin adding easily mashable foods such as well-cooked vegetables and whole grain cereals like oatmeal. Be cautious, as you may find that you do not tolerate some foods well. Make sure that vegetables are thoroughly cooked for easy digestion. You may not be able to eat dry foods such as bread and crackers for some time.
