Designing an Exercise Plan After Weight Loss Surgery

Posted: Sep 10 in About Weight Loss by

Getting started with a fitness routine after weight loss surgery is important, but it may also require some major lifestyle changes. You may need to rethink how you feel about exercise, especially if you’ve spent the last several years avoiding it. How can you create a workout plan that is right for you?

Exercising After Weight Loss Surgery

  • Include aerobic activity, strength training, and stretching: A well-balanced routine will improve your cardiovascular health, tone your muscles, and protect you from injury. Incorporating different types of exercise into your weekly routine can also help avoid boredom.
  • Choose exercises you’re comfortable with: If the idea of joining a fitness class at the local gym intimidates you, save your money and look for something you’re more likely to stick with. Walking after weight loss surgery is a great way to ease into fitness. Using resistance bands in your home can help you build up your strength as you begin to get used to your changing body. Forget about what you think you should be doing and focus on what you’re most likely to actually do on a regular basis.
  • Decide how you’ll track your progress: It’s easier to stick with a fitness routine when you’re working towards a goal and can see that you’re making progress. Try keeping track of how many steps you take during the day or how far you can walk during your routine. You might keep a record of how many days in a row you workout, how much you weigh, or your measurements. Choose goals that are meaningful for you.

The key to building a successful exercise program after weight loss surgery is to create a personalized plan that you’ll actually stick with. An exercise plan is only as good as how often you actually use it!

I definitely started as soon as I was able and slowly changed my workout as my weight loss increased. I exercise regularly to maintain my weight, build muscle and gain energy. It may sometimes takes a little encouragement to get started but you’ll feel good when it’s done.
