Kevin B – LAP-BAND Surgery
Back in 2011 my mother passed away, and I was very depressed. I never cared really about how I looked, but my health problems were making my legs hurt so much. I would just sit and eat, then eat more. I gave up on doing anything for myself. I used to go out and play softball, volleyball, and to take pictures with friends.
When I started gaining weight I just gave up and started eating more. It made me very depressed. I had been heavy all my life, but when I went to the doctor and weighed in at 430 lbs. I was starting to be scared I wouldn’t be able to walk again. Then in 2013 I started using a wheelchair, cane, and scooters every time I went to the store or to do anything. I couldn’t walk without my legs hurting so badly. Finally I realized it was time to do something about my weight. If I didn’t I knew that I was going to die because of my weight issues.
I began to talk to my doctor about weight loss surgery, and spoke with a friend of my Dad from church. He told me about Dr. Bagnato’s office and Coliseum Northside Hospital. On January 6, 2015 I went to see Dr. Bagnato for the first time. He started me on sugar busters while I was finishing all my requirements for my insurance company. On July 22, 2015 I finally had my Lapband surgery. On the diet I lost a good bit of weight, and was down to 382lbs on the day of the procedure. In October of 2015 I decided to give up my wheelchair, and now I am walking without difficulty. It was not easy at first, but with time I started getting around a lot better. In February of 2016 I joined the gym and as of April 26, 2016 I weighed in at 256 lbs. I was so happy to see this!
My goal is to get to 180lbs. With the weight I have lost, I am back playing volleyball and taking pictures again. I workout 5-6 days a week now, riding the bike at least 16 miles. If anyone asks me about my surgery, I tell them the Lapband was the best thing I did, and it saved my life! Since surgery, my life has changed so much. I am able to do more now, and help my wife with things. I’m not even done yet, and will get down to my goal. I want to thank Dr. Bagnato and his staff for helping me get my life back!
