Janie C: Lap Band Surgery

Most of my adult life I have been overweight. You know the sayings: “I’m not overweight; I’m under-tall. I’m in shape; round is a shape. I’m not fat; I’m fluffy. I’m pleasingly plump.” At some time or other, I have used them all. And believe me when I say that it is not fun to be round, fluffy, plump, or under-tall when you get stuck in a lawn chair—no fun at all. In 2016, I was told that I was on the brink of Type 2 Diabetes. And, that was a wake-up call. After some other medical issues were corrected, in 2017, Dr. Bagnato performed lapĀband surgery. When I had my first appointment with him, I asked him how many pounds I should lose. He, with wisdom, did not set an amount. And, I knew that it was up to me how I used the tool he was providing. I set my goal at 60-70 pounds. I am currently maintaining at 62 pounds, well within my goal. I feel better, and think that I look better, too! For many years, I wore only blouses and skirts because I could not find a dress that fit properly. Although I still wear blouses and skirts most of the time, because I like them, I have found dresses that fit—even with a belt to show my waist-line! I have had support from family, friends, staff associated with Dr. Bagnato, and also physicians who care for my other medical needs. Has the process been a walk in the park? No. There were times when I was uncomfortable especially when I did not chew the food properly, for example. Each minor mishap taught me another lesson of what I needed to do to be successful. At the time of the surgery, if I had known then what I know now, would I have had the surgery? A definite “YES!”.
