Maintaining Good Health with Exercise

When lap band surgery is completed, it is important to follow the instructions of a medical professional about the exercise that is appropriate. Even though it may not be possible to engage in aggressive exercise routines immediately after completing the surgery, it is still important to exercise regularly. After your body has healed, it may be possible to gradually increase the exercise until you have formed a new and healthy habit.

Types of Exercises

There are three basic types of exercises: aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Aerobic exercise, which may be called cardiovascular exercise, refers to activities that increase the heart rate. Generally, brisk walking, running or playing a sport would be classified as aerobic exercises.

Strength training is almost as important as the cardiovascular exercises. It refers to the exercises that build up muscles, such as lifting your body weight as in pushups or using weights in a gym.

Generally, stretches and flexibility exercises are designed to keep the muscles flexible and limber. It includes yoga, basic stretches and helps protect you from injury when doing other exercise.

Fitting Exercise into a Schedule

Before and after a bariatric surgery, it is important to exercise on a regular basis. Ideally, you should try to get some form of exercise every day, though the type of exercise that you prefer may vary.

Fitting the exercise into your schedule can seem complicated, but it is actually an easy task. A few ways to increase the exercise in your daily routine include:

  • Walking up the stairs at work
  • Washing the dishes by hand
  • Washing the car
  • Mowing the lawn with a push lawn mower
  • Gardening
  • Taking regular breaks at work and walking around the office
  • Taking a short walk around the neighborhood after work
  • Playing with children

Making a few minor changes to personal habits can naturally increase exercise without actively going to a gym. You can also plan an active exercise routine, like walking in a park or going for a swim, by getting up a little earlier or setting aside a specific time period for a workout routine.

It is not necessary to spend hours at the gym to become healthy, but it is important to exercise regularly to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. Start making small changes and then work on an exercise routine.
