Transoral incisionless surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) offers an exciting new method for providing surgical relief to sufferers of severe heartburn.

Unlike conventional surgery and laparoscopic techniques, Dr. Bagnato performs transoral incisionless surgery procedures through the patient’s mouth, not through a surgical incision.

Performed under general anesthetic without incisions or internal cutting, this method of surgical repair can be practically pain-free.

The benefits of Transoral Incisionless Surgery

  • No External Skin Incision
  • No scarring
  • No internal cutting or dissecting of organs
  • Fewer adverse events and complications
  • Does not limit future treatment options

The Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication procedure featuring the EsophyX instrument is the first incisionless technique to fully correct the underlying cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is caused by a physical anatomical defect present at the gastroesophageal junction. The TIF procedure uses an endoscope to guide the EsophyX device. The EsophyX device makes it possible to reconstruct a durable anti-reflux valve, which prevents acid flow from the stomach into the esophagus. The Low Esophageal Sphincter, or LES, is also tightened at this time to prevent esophageal reflux.

Transoral surgery for GERD is usually highly effective. Two years after the procedure, 85% of patients remained heartburn-free, and 79% could successfully remain off of all dependency on heartburn medications such as PPIs.

Transoral surgery for GERD drastically reduces the recovery period. Many patients can return to regular activity just one day after their procedure. In addition, the transoral procedure is repeatable if necessary. It provides patients with a long-term solution to their esophageal reflux disease that does not involve the use of daily medication.
