Why Are Support Groups So Helpful After Lap Band Surgery?

Posted: Aug 12 in About Weight Loss by

Joining a support group can be a great way to help you get through the time following your lap band surgery. Navigating your new lifestyle can be so much easier when you have people to share your concerns with. It can also be a lot of fun to celebrate successes together! You can really benefit from the emotional support and practical information that is found in a support group environment. Sometimes just a simple suggestion can help you avoid a common problem. Other times something you have learned may help someone else.

People in support groups for bariatric surgery can be there for one another in a way that family and friends cannot. They face many of the same challenges, and the group offers a “safe place” for them to blow off steam or share funny stories. It can be nice to know that others are going through a similar situation. If you are going to have lap band surgery, why not check in with your doctor and ask if there is a support group that you can attend in your area. Not only is it something that can help keep you on track, but you might even make some life-long friends along the way.

Yes the support groups encourage interactions between those attending. We all need support outside of our monthly group meeting and many of our patients want to exchange emails and to build friendships. That is the main goal of our monthly meetings. Amy G

Do the support group meetings encourage mingling between the patients, exchanging emails for help or friendship building?

The Bariatric Institute is working very hard to bring interesting and helpful topics to our patients and others that are interested in attending. Support groups not only provide helpful tips and information, but also allow us to have a close network with our peers, which also helps with our success. Please send any topics that you are interested in learning about

I would like to encourage EVERYONE to attend our monthly support meetings. Not only are they informative, they are fun! You meet other patients who share the same life style change you have made with the lap band. It is so encourging to see each other shrinking each month!! PLEASE MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND. This month we are taking up canned goods and/or unwrapped toys. Give it a chance and come to one meeting. I promise you will be hooked. Being a member of “the band” takes practice….so come to practice each month. Debra Coker – PROUD MEMBER OF THE BAND!!!!! 🙂
