If you are obese or have a lot of weight to lose, weight loss surgery coupled with lifestyle changes can help jump-start your weight loss program. Individuals who undergo weight loss surgery typically lose between 25 to 35 percent of their total body weight. With a healthy diet and regular exercise, this weight loss can be maintained for over a decade, if not longer.

Growing up, things were not what you would consider “easy.” From being teased about my size and being told “no you can’t do that,” I guess it is safe to say that I just got use to it. I was never one of the smallest among us but I always tried to “fit in” and play sports, and do what I could to “beat the odds.” It just seemed like whatever I tried to do to lose weight either did not work or back fired and went the opposite direction. There were times that no matter how hard I tried to exercise and lose weight, the opposite happened.

Posted: May 07 in Gastric Band Blog by

In our hectic lives, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by stress. From credit card bills and job woes, to family tensions and general anxiety, stress can leave us feeling exhausted, defeated and unsure of ourselves. Constant stress can cause a hormone imbalance in our body and a build-up of cortisol, which leads to weight gain.

I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. This includes most of my childhood. I’ve tried multiple diets and failed at reaching a healthy weight. Diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, joint problems…the entire army of weight related problems run in my family. I knew that if I kept going at the rate that I was going, that I would eventually succumb to one or all of these diseases myself. So far, I only suffered from asthma and joint problems. When I stepped on the scale in 2008 and realized that I carried 325lbs on my 5’2” frame, I knew that something had to change. At the same time, I just didn’t want to start another diet and fail.

I want to begin this testimonial by saying that Dr. Bagnato and Palmyra Bariatric Institute has definitely changed my life not only physically but mentally…and for the positive! I will not begin with a sad, sob story about how I was a lonely over-weight child/teen and all the problems and drama that came along with it because most everyone that has had the Lap-Band surgery has probably had similar stories and can relate to my journey through all that. I am not going to retell all the rollercoaster trips on the many other failed diets that I had tried over the years, or the disappointment of regaining the lost weight plus extra weight and embarrassment of explaining why “I” failed again! I am going to explain my decision to choose Lap-Band, Dr. B. and Palmyra Bariatric.

When I decided to have Lap Band surgery done, at a mere 5 ft 1 inch tall, I tipped the scales at a whopping 298 pounds. After getting off the scales that morning I wanted to scream at myself out of anger. My Grandmother had passed away from too much fat around her heart (she was 399 pounds when she passed and was only 4’11’’). I remember my Mom stating several times to me that she was so concerned about my weight, and I told my Mom I would never get that big, but I realized that morning that I almost was that big.

My journey began in 1972 when I started first grade. I am the kid who liked school lunches and always went back for seconds. Now, flash forward 35 years and 350 lbs, you see me in July of 2007 when I first walked into Dr. Bagnato’s office. It took me another two years (and an [...]
