Driving without a seatbelt is a huge safety hazard, yet every day people get in the car without buckling up first. For some, not fastening their seatbelt is a result of a poor habit, but for others it is a conscious decision. Obese drivers in particular are less likely to buckle up when they are behind the wheel, as seatbelts are often tight and uncomfortable. If you are ready to take the life-altering step of pursuing bariatric surgery and are getting a Lap Band, then it is important for you to reduce your risk of a deadly accident by buckling your seatbelt. [Read more]

Whether you’ve just had bariatric surgery or you’re looking to lose a few pounds before your Lap-Band procedure, there’s no better time than now to start programming your mind to think healthily. Chances are it’s been a while since you’ve had to actively think about what foods you are eating and how they’re affecting your body, but after bariatric surgery healthy decision making should quickly become second nature. [Read more]

In the wake of recent efforts by the Institute of Medicine to implement a nationwide strategy to conquer the American obesity epidemic, many are taking another look at how the overweight are treated in our society. The two-thirds of our nation who are now overweight are often subjected to ridicule and bias based on their weight, which may be the last socially-accepted form of discrimination in our country. Weight stigmatization causes the overweight to not only become marginalized and depressed—it also contributes to continued weight gain throughout America. [Read more]

Wood pulp, Castoreum and Ammonium Sulfate—do you know what all three of these have in common, besides sounding like common household cleaning agents? These three ingredients aren’t going to be found in your garage or even your cleaning supply cabinet, but are more likely to show up in your pantry or refrigerator. That’s right, these are three surprising ingredients that you can find in a lot of highly processed foods sold at your local Macon grocery stores or fast foods chains. [Read more]

The weekend: for many of us, it’s a time of relaxation and leisure, a time of sleeping in late and staying out later. We often change our schedules entirely on the weekend in an attempt to escape from the travails of our hectic work weeks. Although sleeping in on Saturday and Sunday can feel great, new research shows that this kind of schedule switching can have detrimental health impacts by throwing our circadian rhythms out of whack. [Read more]

Many working adults are confronted with the option of a second, more delicious breakfast they arrive to work. This happens most when the office secretary happens to bring in a dozen warm, gooey doughnuts for someone’s birthday or there is any early-morning meeting with a lovely display of muffins and baked goods to entice your interest in whatever boring topic is up for discussion. Saying no is hard to do to a warm iced cinnamon roll even if you did already eat breakfast at home—chances are it was some cold piece of toast or a bland fiber-filled waffle your husband or wife threw at you as you rushed out the door. [Read more]

When it comes to being healthy, having fun isn’t often the first thing that comes to mind. Perhaps it should be though. Do you remember running around as a kid? From morning until nightfall, kids run around on the playground swinging, sliding and chasing each other until it is time to go home. If you were to ask a child how often they go and ‘work-out,’ chances are you will get a blank stare. Why is this? Because when you are out having fun, it doesn’t feel like you are working out! [Read more]
