While you can lose weight by walking or doing other types of exercise, combining exercise with a balanced diet is the easiest way to lose weight. But even something as simple as walking every day can help you lose more weight than dieting alone.

One pound of fat is equal to roughly 3,500 calories. That means that cutting 500 calories from your typical diet every day and maintaining your current level of activity would help you to lose about one pound a week. However, if you incorporate walking into your daily routine as well, you can increase that weight loss. Just 30 minutes of brisk walking would burn about 150 calories, which would be the equivalent to 1/3 of a pound per week. If you walk more quickly, you’ll burn more calories, especially since you get the most weight loss benefit from activity that’s of a moderately intense level. Ideally, you should try to build up gradually to a walking speed of 3 to 4 miles per hour.

Once you’ve reached your ideal weight, exercise is even more significant for weight maintenance. Even more than calorie restriction, consistent exercise will keep your weight off. As long as you burn more calories than you consume and walk or perform other consistent physical activity, you’ll be able to get and stay healthy!

Authors of a recent commentary in the Canadian Medical Association Journal argue that food addiction may be a real struggle for some individuals and should be considered when talking about weight loss methods.

Dr. Valerie Taylor, a psychiatrist at McMaster University and co-author of the commentary, admits that “the concept of addiction is complex, and the delineation of its defining characteristics has fostered considerable debate.”

Taylor points out that overeating and the resulting weight gain involves a “compulsive pattern of use, even in the face of negative health and social consequences.” In this way, food addiction can be compared to other addictive behaviors. Also, food, like drugs or alcohol, can cause a type of tolerance where an increased amount becomes necessary to achieve satisfaction. In addition, people who try to stop overeating or switch to low-sugar or low-fat diets can find themselves suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

Taylor and co-authors go on to say that “the concept of addiction does not negate the role of free will and personal choice. It may, however, provide insight into why a some individuals with obesity continue to struggle.”

Taylor and her associates suggest that therapies which have been traditionally applied to the area of substance addiction may be helpful for people who are trying to lose weight.

While experts and physicians often recommend walking as a great way for inactive people to ease into fitness, it’s hard to believe that something so simple can make a difference in your health and fitness level.

Are the benefits of walking really worth your time?

Absolutely. Regular walking can help you manage your weight, strengthen your heart and bones, and increase your mood and cognitive function. A brisk walk can actually provide almost as challenging of a workout as jogging!

One study performed at the University of Pittsburgh showed that overweight people who walked briskly for 30 to 60 minutes per day lost weight, even if they didn’t change any other lifestyle habits. Another study found that people who walked for at least four hours per week gained less weight than non-walkers as they aged.

Exactly how many calories you burn when walking will depend on how quickly you walk and how much you weigh. The more you weigh and the faster you walk, the more calories you’ll burn. Walking up hill and pumping your arms while you walk will also help you burn more calories. You can use these formulas to get an estimate of how many calories you can burn by walking.

3.0 miles/hour (20-minute mile): Burns .027 calories/pound/minute.

3.5 miles/hour (17-minute mile): Burns .033 calories/pound/minute.

4.0 miles/hour (15-minute mile): Burns .042 calories/pound/minute.

4.5 miles/hour (13-minute mile): Burns .047 calories/pound/minute.

In other words, if you weigh 150 pounds and you walk at a speed of 3 mph for 60 minutes, you can multiply .027 by 150 by 60 and find that you burned 243 calories.

Thanks to several factors, complications arising from bariatric surgery and the resulting costs have declined over the last several years, a new study shows.

Thanks to several factors, complications arising from bariatric surgery and the resulting costs have declined over the last several years, a new study shows.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has discovered that on average, complications relating to bariatric surgery declined 21% between 2002 and 2006. Much of this improvement is attributable to an increased use of vertical-banded gastroplasty and lap-band surgery over gastric bypass surgery, more use of laparoscopy, and increased technical experience among surgeons performing said procedures. As an additional benefit, hospital payments for bariatric surgery patients also dropped, partially due to the reduced need for hospital re-admissions from complications.

“Recent Improvements in Bariatric Surgery Outcomes,” published in the May 2009 Medical Care, detailed that the complication rate among bariatric surgical patients dropped approximately 24%, mainly occurring due to a significant decrease of 58% in the rate of post-surgical infections. Additionally, complications like staple leakage and abdominal hernias, among others, decreased by between 29 and 50%.

The research found that even with an increase in the number of older and sicker patients having bariatric surgery, the complication rate still declined. The Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, said that people “considering an elective procedure need unbiased, science-based evidence of its benefits and risks . . . all surgeries involve risks, but as newer technologies emerge and surgeons and hospitals gain experience, as this study shows, risks can decrease.”

Before you get started on weight loss, take some time to think about your long-term goals. Develop a strategy that will give you the best chance of losing weight and keeping it off after LAP-BAND surgery. Here are a few tips for getting started on your weight loss program the right way.

1. Know Your Weight Loss Personality

Our personalities play a role in how we look at food and dieting. Your personality can also give you some insight into what obstacles you might encounter along the way and how you can prepare to overcome them.

Impulsive. If you’re an impulsive person, you might be more likely to see a pint of ice cream in the freezer and dive in. Having tempting foods around will make dieting more difficult for you. Take the time to clear your kitchen cupboards and refrigerator of unhealthy food choices.

Oblivious. You may not describe yourself as “oblivious” in the rest of your life, but do you notice that you tend to be unaware of how much you’ve eaten until long after you’ve overfilled yourself? Do you often find yourself snacking mindlessly in front of the TV? Avoid situations where you can eat without watching your portions. Sit down to eat your meals and snacks and try keeping a food journal.

Uptight. People who are anxious, nervous, or depressed will sometimes eat to feel better. If you think of yourself as an anxious person, be on the lookout for emotional eating.

2. Know Why You Want to Lose Weight

Successfully losing weight and keeping it off requires making a serious commitment to yourself. Before you decide to drastically change your eating and exercise habits, take a moment to examine why you’ve decided to lose weight.

Ask yourself:

Am I ready to do this?

Am I doing this for me, or someone else?

Am I prepared for occasional setbacks or lack of progress?

Can I focus on weight loss fully?

If you answered yes to all of these questions, you have a pretty good chance of succeeding. If you answered no or aren’t sure of your answer to any of these questions, it might be worth it to invest some time and thought into figuring out what’s holding you back.

Do you know someone who seems to have the perfect body? Have you ever noticed a stranger who looked trim, healthy, and fit and wondered, why can’t I look like that? It’s easy to get caught up in comparing our bodies to the people we see around us, especially when other people seem to have an easier time than we do of maintaining an ideal weight.

Don’t Let Others’ Success Sabotage Your Weight Loss Goals

Comparing yourself to other people who seem to look “better” than you can actually prevent you from looking better yourself. A negative self-esteem or self image makes it difficult to take care of yourself the way you need to in order to lose weight. While it’s okay to be inspired by other people’s successes, avoid thoughts that make you feel like a failure for not achieving the same results someone else has.

Be Inspired, Not Defeated

When you look at somebody else’s body, it’s important to remember that your own shape is determined by your genetics. You can be inspired by their lifestyle, but avoid thinking of their body as an ideal you need to achieve.

Try focusing on the behaviors that can motivate and positively influence you. Do you know someone who makes time to exercise every morning? Does your healthy friend make good food choices when you go out to lunch together? You may never look exactly the way someone else looks, but you can learn to do what they do and achieve your own version of weight loss success.

Low-carbohydrate diets have been touted as an easy way to lose weight quickly, but getting rid of carbohydrates may mean sacrificing some of your energy.

While low-carb diets can cause a quick drop in weight, most of the weight you’ll lose is water weight that comes from water in your muscles. It’s better to focus on building lean muscle and losing fat if you want to look and feel better long term.

If you want to lose weight and have energy, the key is to focus on eating a balanced diet that includes the right kind of carbohydrates. Focus on eating carbohydrates that come with valuable fiber. Complex carbohydrates will help regulate your blood sugar levels and give you valuable nutrients with very few calories. Examples of complex carbohydrates include: whole fruits, vegetables, beans, whole-grain breads, cereals made from whole grains, and brown rice.

Eating a diet that is made of up lean proteins, fiber, and good carbohydrates while also being low in calories and fat is the healthiest way to lose weight. You may lose weight more slowly, but it will be easier to keep the weight off in the long run. A balanced diet with moderate exercise will also help you feel better while you’re working to lose weight.

Video Transcript

Alright, I want to give you some insight about port placement. As you know to make the lap band work you have to access the band and add fluid to it through a port which is placed under the skin.

Most surgeons place the port in the abdomen we choose to place our ports up here in the shoulder. We use a very small low profile port, it’s very cosmetic, the incision is made under the arm you can’t really see that. It is much more convenient to get the fills. If it’s more convenient to get the fills and less costly you get more fills and if you get more fills you get more weight loss.

The ports are also less likely to flip and move because they are in the upper part of the chest where there is hardly any movement as opposed to the abdomen where every time you bend or move, the port has a tendency to wiggle.

The port placement in the shoulder allows us to have easy access. We have a clinic set up at the hospital where you can get your fills; it usually takes about 15 minutes.

Weight loss and weight maintenance is rarely easy, but the holidays can make it even harder. Holiday parties, an abundance of food, and added stress and activities all make sticking to a healthy diet and exercise routine more difficult than ever. But with a little preparation, you can survive the holiday season with your weight loss and fitness goals in tact.

Tips For Holiday Fitness Goals

Have realistic expectations. If holiday traveling and seasonal parties make it difficult to keep up with the same schedule, be flexible with yourself. Do the best you can. Many people take an all or nothing approach to their fitness goals, which makes it difficult to keep making progress when inevitable missteps occur. Set an interim holiday goal of keeping up with half of your regular fitness schedule.

Eat well whenever you can. Always look for healthy options at holiday parties. If you indulge in some of your favorite holiday sweets, resolve to make healthier food choices the next chance you get.

Eat a health breakfast and lunch. Make sure that you’re not skipping these important meals and you’ll be less likely to overeat at evening holiday parties.

Balance good physical health with mental health. Keep your goals realistic and be kind to yourself if you indulge in foods you would normally avoid. Depression can make it more difficult to get back on track, so make a special effort to take care of yourself and get plenty of rest.

Holiday weight gain is usually the result of people throwing in the towel on their fitness goals over the holidays. Instead, try to practice moderation and make an effort to enjoy the season.

The holiday season brings with it extra opportunities to eat and, for many people, eat poorly. Holiday weight gain is not only common, it’s almost expected. But you don’t have to resign yourself to packing on pounds that you’ll have to resolve to burn off after the New Year. Here are a few tips to help you manage your weight during the holiday season.

5 Tips To Fight Holiday Weight Gain

1. Eat breakfast. Not only will eating a health breakfast help you resist the urge to overeat during the day, breakfast-eaters report being able to maintain a better mood and higher energy levels throughout the day, which you’ll need to get through all your holiday chores.

2. Drink water. Getting plenty of water is an excellent way to fight off fatigue and keep your weight in check. It will also keep your stomach full at holiday parties.

3. Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is packed with empty calories. It’s also a natural depressant and can interfere with the quality of your sleep.

4. Fill your candy dishes with healthy snacks. Skip the fudge and rum balls and set out a bowl of fruit, crackers, pretzels or low-fat hard candy.

5. Pick healthy carbs. Fall and winter months tend to increase your cravings for carbohydrates. Plan to have healthy carbohydrates around for midday snacks to satisfy these urges.

You’ll find temptation from Thanksgiving to New Year’s, but you don’t have to give in. Make the commitment to maintain your weight through the holidays and start the next year ahead of the dieting curve.
